HOW TO MAKE SENSE OF THE RESOURCE LISTINGS AND THE CURRICULUM ELEMENTS ON THIS PAGE

All resources on this page are all linked to specific levels of N1/N2 (whole numbers / fractions, decimals, %s) in the UK Adult Numeracy Core Curriculum. To find resources for other areas of the curriculum (measures, data handling) and other levels (E1, E2, E3, L2 number) click here.  If you can't find the resource you need contact Maggie for help. The original 2001 printed version of the adult numeracy curriculum has been updated (2009) and replaced by an online interactive curriculum on the Excellence Gateway site (you will need to register in order to access the literacy, numeracy, pre-entry & ESOL curricula).

N1/L1.7 Work out simple ratio and direct proportion

The deep blue section gives the curriculum level and element number. N1 = whole numbers (N2 = fractions, decimals, percentages), L1 = Level 1.

(a) understand simple ratio as the number of parts i.e. three parts to one part

The medium blue section gives extra information about the skills, knowledge and understanding expected from learners after working on this curriculum element. There can be between 0-7 sub-elements listed (this example includes 3: labelled a, b and c).

Note - white highlighting indicates elements or sub-elements that have been added or amended in the 2009 curriculum update.

(b) understand direct proportion as the same rate of increase or decrease, e.g. double, half
(c) understand the relationship between simple ratio and fractions
  • Use practical contexts to illustrate, e.g. scale quantities up (or down), using direct proportion in cooking recipes, cement mixes, etc.

  • Calculate the quantities involved in diluting liquids, e.g. for soft drinks, fertiliser and weed-killer, thinning paint for sealing new plaster, etc.

  • Compare ratios and fractions, e.g. one part juice to 3 parts water is the same as 1/4 juice in total volume.

The pale blue bulleted section lists suggested activities and examples as listed in the new online curriculum. The new online curriculum on the Excellence Gateway also has an area where tutors can add their own suggested activities.

N1/L1.4 Multiply and divide whole numbers by 10, 100 and 1000
(a) understand place value for whole numbers and to two-decimal places
  • Use a calculator or spreadsheet investigation to multiply whole numbers by 10, by 100 and 1000, starting with single digits, two digits, etc. Deduce 'rules' from the patterns. (Beware of rules expressed as 'add a nought, add two noughts', etc. This may hide a lack of understanding of place value and lead to problems with decimals - it is better to look at the position of the digits.)

  • Repeat the above for division. The inverse rule 'knock off a nought' obviously doesn't work if the number doesn't end in zero.

  • For division, round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 and use this to estimate the results.

  • Fill in the missing operator in number sentences, e.g. 250 ? 10 = 25.

  • Change whole pounds to pence, and vice versa.

  • Change whole metres to centimetres and vice versa.

  • Change whole grams to kilograms and vice versa.

N1/L1.7 Work out simple ratio and direct proportion

(a) understand simple ratio as the number of parts i.e. three parts to one part

N1/L1.8 Approximate by rounding

a) understand that numbers can be rounded to different degrees of accuracy e.g. to nearest 10, 1000, 10 000, million)
  • Discuss the degree of accuracy in approximations, e.g. population figures, a sensible rounding of football attendance in the Premier League for reporting purposes in newspapers, compared with the needs of the financial departments of the clubs.

  • Practise approximating by using everyday examples, e.g. rounding distances of local towns to the nearest 5 or 10 miles.

  • Round large numbers to the nearest million, hundred thousand, ten thousand.

  • Set up a spreadsheet using the ROUND function for learners to practise and self-check rounding large numbers to the nearest 1000, 10,000, million, etc. (e.g. in Excel, = ROUND(A1,-6) in cell B1 automatically rounds a number in A1 to the nearest million; see Excel Help).

N1/L1.9 Estimate answers to calculations

(a) know how to make approximate calculations
(b) understand that a knowledge of context enables "guessing" at answers (e.g. it should be about ...), or judging if answers are sensible (e.g. that's far too big; it doesn't make sense to have an answer less than 1, etc.)
  • Use rounding and number bonds to 10, to estimate totals, e.g. from shopping lists, bills, bank statements, etc. with the total blocked out.

  • Approximate calculations: investigate the answers using different approximations. How accurate do you need to be?

N1/L1.10 Solve problems with and without a calculator involving positive numbers NEW Curriculum element (added 2009)

(a) Know how to use the standard order of operation to solve multi-step calculations
  • Match word problems to problems written in symbols.

  • Translate a multi-step problem written in words to symbolic form.

  • Discuss how different calculators work to solve multi-stage problems, e.g. 25 + 0.15 x 12 (representing the monthly charge and additional cost to send 12 picture text messages @ 15p per message). Scientific calculators would work out the multiplication first.

  • Use appropriate calculations to solve problems, e.g. calculating the amount of concentrated lawn feed needed to cover a particular area, or comparing different products in different quantities to establish the best purchase.

  • Work back to create a problem from a given answer, e.g. if the answer is 12, what is the question?

N1/L1.11 Solve problems involving algebra NEW Curriculum element (added 2009)

(a) Know how to form word expressions from simple expressions in symbols
(b) Evaluate simple expressions and formulae
(c) Translate simple word problems into symbols (+, -, x and x) and numbers
  • Form expressions from word problems, e.g. ‘I had some money in my purse. I was given £3. I now have £10. How much did I have originally?' should become x + 3 = 10.

  • Discuss different word problems which could result from the same formula, e.g. 5 T-shirts cost £25. How much does 1 cost? 5 cars took 25 people to a party. How many people were in each car? These problems could both be solved by using the formula 5x = 25.

N2/L1.1 Read, write, order and compare in words and figures common fractions and mixed numbers
(a) know common equivalent fractions e.g. equivalent to a half, quarters, thirds, fifths, tenths
(b) understand that in unit fractions, the larger the denominator, the smaller the fraction, but that this is not true of non-unit fractions
(c) Understand how a mixed number may be expressed as an improper 'top heavy' fraction
  • Use a fraction wall to compare the sizes of unit fractions and common fractions.

  • Use the table facility in Word to draw a fraction wall. Order a set of unit fractions.

  • Order a set of common unit and non-unit fractions, e.g. including three-quarters, two-thirds.

  • Order a set of common fractions and mixed numbers, e.g. halves, quarters, tenths including mixed numbers.

  • Use everyday examples, e.g. 1¾ hours, 2½ pints.
