HOW TO MAKE SENSE OF THE RESOURCE LISTINGS AND THE CURRICULUM ELEMENTS ON THIS PAGE

All resources on this page are all linked to specific levels of N1/N2 (whole numbers / fractions, decimals, %s) in the UK Adult Numeracy Core Curriculum. To find resources for other areas of the curriculum (measures, data handling) and other levels (E1, E2, L1, L2 number) click here.  If you can't find the resource you need contact Maggie for help. The original 2001 printed version of the adult numeracy curriculum has been updated (2009) and replaced by an online interactive curriculum on the Excellence Gateway site (you will need to register in order to access the literacy, numeracy, pre-entry & ESOL curricula).

N2/E3.1 Read, write and understand common fractions (e.g. 3/4, 2/3, 1/10) The deep blue section gives the curriculum level and element number. N2 = fractions, decimals, percentages (N1 = whole numbers), E3 = level Entry 3
(a) understand that the bottom number (denominator) indicates the number of equal parts in the whole The medium blue section gives extra information about the skills, knowledge and understanding expected from learners after working on this curriculum element. There can be between 0-7 sub-elements listed (this example includes 3: labelled a, b and c).

Note - white highlighting indicates elements or sub-elements that have been added or amended in the 2009 curriculum update.

(b) understand that a unit fraction is one part of a whole divided into equal parts (e.g. 1/5 1/8 1/10)
(c) understand that non-unit fractions are several equal parts of a whole, indicated by the top number (numerator)
  • Match shaded fractions of shapes to fractions. (Ensure the understanding of equal parts, rather than just parts.
  • Use different shapes divided in different orientations, not just vertical divisions.)
  • Match fractions in words and symbols.
  • Read fractions used in everyday material, e.g. in newspaper headlines and reports, adverts, catalogues, sale signs and special offers, e.g. 1/3 off.
The pale blue bulleted section lists suggested activities and examples as listed in the new online curriculum. The new online curriculum on the Excellence Gateway also has an area where tutors can add their own suggested activities.

N1/E3.10 Understand simple algebra problem. New element added in the 2009 curriculum update
(a) Solve two-step word problems
  • Learners write their own problems which involve two steps to get the solution. For example: you have £10 in your purse. You buy an item for £6 and get £10 cashback at the supermarket. How much do you now have in your purse?
    10 - 6 = 4

(c) understand that non-unit fractions are several equal parts of a whole, indicated by the top number (numerator)
  • Match shaded fractions of shapes to fractions. (Ensure the understanding of equal parts, rather than just parts.
  • Use different shapes divided in different orientations, not just vertical divisions.)

E3 Decimals
N2/E3.3 Read, write and understand decimals up to two decimal places in practical contexts (such as: common measures to one decimal place, e.g. 1.5 m; money in decimal notation, e.g. £2.37)
(a) understand that the decimal point separates pounds and pence, or metres and cms
(b) understand the use of zero as a place holder, e.g. £1.05 is £1 and 5p
(c) understand the use of a leading zero, e.g. 35p = £0.35; 0.5m  = 50 cm
(d) recognise .5 as a half, e.g. 2.5m as 2 1/2 m
(e) understand how decimals are spoken, e.g. 3.14 is said as three point one four and not as three point fourteen New sub-element added in the 2009 curriculum update
For adding and subtracting money using decimal notation and for entering money correctly in a calculator see MSS1/E3.1 and N2/E3.5 (below)
  • Answer questions like ‘how many pence in £1.60, £2.06?' to reinforce decimal notation.

  • Read sums of money written in decimal notation from adverts, price lists, menus.

  • Write amounts in pence using decimal notation, e.g. 45p = £0.45.

  • Select coins (£1, 10p, 1p) to match sums of money in decimal notation.

  • Use a metre rule to show how decimal parts of metres are written.

  • Emphasise the use of zero in £1.50 but not in 1.5 m.

  • Enter the same list of numbers, to one decimal place, in two columns in a spreadsheet. Format the second column to currency and compare numbers in each column.

E3 Calculators
N2/E3.4 Use a calculator to calculate using whole numbers and decimals to solve whole problems in context, and to check calculations

(c) know and use strategies to check answers obtained with a calculator
  • Compare different calculators, and identify differences.
  • Discuss the benefits and pitfalls of using a calculator.
  •  Discuss methods of checking answers obtained using a calculator, e.g. using inverse operations, adding or multiplying in a different order, estimation.
  • Provide calculator investigations to develop number and calculator skills.
  • Compare the symbols for 'divide' on hand-held and on-screen calculators and computer keyboards and mobile phone calculators.
