HOW TO MAKE SENSE OF THE RESOURCE LISTINGS AND THE CURRICULUM ELEMENTS ON THIS PAGE

All resources on this page are all linked to specific levels of N1/N2 (whole numbers/fractions) in the UK Adult Numeracy Core Curriculum. To find resources for other areas of the curriculum (measures, data handling) and other levels (E1, E3, L1 , L2 number) click here.  If you can't find the resource you need - please contact Maggie for help. The original 2001 printed version of the adult numeracy curriculum has been updated (2009) and replaced by an online interactive curriculum on the Excellence Gateway site (you will need to register in order to access the literacy, numeracy, pre-entry and ESOL curricula).

N1/E2.1 Count reliably up to 100 items. The deep blue section gives the curriculum level and element number. N1 = whole numbers (N2 = fractions), E2 = level Entry 2.
(a) Count in twos and tens up to 100. The medium blue section gives extra information about the skills, knowledge and understanding expected from learners after working on this curriculum element.

There can be between 0-7 sub-elements listed (this example includes 2: labelled a and b).

Note - white highlighting indicates elements or sub-elements that have been added or amended in the 2009 curriculum update.

(b)  Count on in tens up to 100, starting from any two-digit number.
  • Count the number of objects or items in a list.
  • Count the value of a pile of: 10p coins, counting in tens; 2p coins counting in twos.
  • Count on in tens, using 10p coins, e.g. to give change, to pay for something, to count takings for the bank, etc.
  • Complete number lines to practise counting in twos or tens.
  • Explore the 'Edit: Fill, Series' function on a spreadsheet, using different Start and Stop values, and Step values of two or ten
The pale blue bulleted section lists suggested activities and examples as listed in the new online curriculum. The new online curriculum on the Excellence Gateway also has an area where tutors can add their own suggested activities.

(d) know doubles of numbers to 10
(e) understand the relationship between halving and doubling
  • Discuss multiplication, using vocabulary such as lots of and times with practical examples.
  • Write repeated addition sums as multiplication, and vice versa, e.g. 5 + 5 + 5 = 3 x 5; 2 x 6 = 6 + 6; match using cards.
  • Extend sequences, fill in the gaps, using multiples of 2 and 10.
  • Match pairs of numbers which are halves/doubles.
  • Discuss strategies for solving practical problems, e.g. calculating how many eggs in 3 cartons, multipacks of fruit juice or chocolate bars.

N1/E2.9 Use estimation in solving problems and to check if solutions are sensible  New element added in 2009 curriculum update

(a) identify the nearest ten to any two digit number
(b) recognise a reasonable answer in a familiar context
  • Be able to recognise that a group of 7 people plus a group of 11 is ‘about 20'.
  • Check bills using estimation, e.g. buying items costing 28p and 37p and being charged 75p: is this reasonable?
  • Pick out reasonable/unreasonable estimates.

Problem solving and using calculators

N1/E2.7 Solve problems with and without a calculator, and interpret + - x and = in practical situations This element amended in 2009 curriculum update

N1/E2.8 Use a calculator to check operations with whole numbers (now amalgamated with N1/E2.7- above). There is now NO E2.8 element

(a) understand that + - x represent operations
(b) understand the order to enter a two-digit number
(c) understand the order to key in numbers and operators
(d) know how to clear the display and cancel a wrong entry
  • Use symbols to record whole-number calculations when solving problems.
  • Match words to symbols, using a range of vocabulary.
  • Match word problems to written calculations.
  • Translate single-step word problems into symbols and solve.
  • Discuss possible word problems for problems given in numbers and symbols.
  • Use a calculator to investigate the relationship between addition and multiplication, and between addition and subtraction.
  • Use a calculator to check any calculations at this level.
  • Compare the symbols for 'multiply' on hand-held and on-screen calculators and computer keyboards.

Simple algebra

N1/E2.10 Solve simple one-step word problems New element added in 2009 curriculum update

(a) understand simple one-step word problems
  • Solve word problems such as:
‘4 people leave a party. There are still 8 people left at the party. How many people were there at the start?'
‘You cut 30cm from a length of wood. There is still 70cm left. How long was the piece of wood before it was cut?'
‘You buy a T-shirt and a scarf. The T-shirt costs £6. If you spend £11 altogether, how much was the scarf?'
  • Solve number problems such as:
‘I think of a number and add 2. The answer is 7. What is my number?'
