HOW TO MAKE SENSE OF THE RESOURCE LISTINGS AND THE CURRICULUM ELEMENTS ON THIS PAGE

All worksheets and resources on this page are all linked Entry Level 3 of the Adult Literacy Core Curriculum (England). To find resources for other levels of the curriculum (pre-Entry, E1, E3, L1, L2) click here.  If you can't find the resource you need - please contact Maggie for help. The original 2001 printed version of the adult literacy curriculum has been updated (2009) and replaced by an online interactive curriculum on the Excellence Gateway site (you will need to register in order to access the literacy, numeracy, pre-entry and ESOL curricula).

Some resources (shown by purple shading) in the literacy sections are linked to the DfES Skills for life Learner Materials. Printed versions of these (with audio CDS) were available free to all institutions in England teaching adult literacy, numeracy or ESOL. They are still available as PDF downloads on the Excellence Gateway. Some hard copies may also still be available - see here.

Ws/E2.2 Use adjectives

The deep green section gives the curriculum area and element number.

E2 = Entry Level 2
R = reading, W = writing: ( t = text, s = sentence, w = word)

SL = speaking & listening (lr = listen & respond, c = speak to communicate, d = engage in discussion).

(a) understand that adjectives extend the information in sentences, by providing some detail about a noun

The medium green section gives extra information about the skills, knowledge and understanding expected from learners after working on this curriculum element. There can be between 0-7 sub-elements listed (this example includes 4: labelled a, b, c and d).

Note - white highlighting indicates elements or sub-elements that have been added or amended in the 2009 curriculum update.

(b) understand that adjectives help the writer to describe people, feelings, places, situations, objects in more detail

(c) understand that the choice of adjectives can often convey a writer’s attitude

(d) know and use the term adjective

  • Write a short description of a favourite place for someone who has not been there.

The pale green bulleted section lists suggested activities and examples as listed in the new online curriculum. The new online curriculum on the Excellence Gateway also has an area where tutors can add their own suggested activities.

Ww/E2.2  use knowledge of sound–symbol relationships and phonological patterns (e.g. consonant clusters, vowel phonemes) to help work out correct spellings, as appropriate for needs of the learner

(a) understand that many words follow regular spelling patterns which correspond to certain sounds

(b) understand that most irregular words have at least some regular elements

(b) understand that it is possible to greatly reduce the chances of making random spelling errors by applying their knowledge of spelling patterns and rules

(c) understand that adding -s to nouns is a common way of indicating more than one, and know the term plural

(d) understand that –ed and –ing are common spellings at the end of words to show the past and present forms of verbs

(e) understand that some words can be split into parts to help spelling, e.g. compound words, words with prefixes or suffixes

  • Extend and secure their knowledge of the spelling of common regular words, including: common spelling patterns for long vowel phonemes; common spelling patterns for short vowel phonemes; plurals ending in -s, verbs with -ed and -ing endings; familiar compound words (e.g. football, teaspoon); words with common prefixes (e.g. un-, dis-, to indicate the negative).
  • Encourage learners to construct real texts for use in contexts of their choice (e.g. their workplace or community), in order to extend their knowledge of spelling.
