HOW TO MAKE SENSE OF THE RESOURCE LISTINGS AND THE CURRICULUM ELEMENTS ON THIS PAGE

All resources on this page are all linked to specific levels of N1 (whole numbers) in the UK Adult Numeracy Core Curriculum. To find resources for other areas of the curriculum (measures, data handling) and other levels (E2, E3, L1 , L2 number) click here.  If you can't find the resource you need - please contact Maggie for help. The original 2001 printed version of the adult numeracy curriculum has been updated (2009) and replaced by an online interactive curriculum on the Excellence Gateway site (you will need to register in order to access the literacy, numeracy, pre-entry and ESOL curricula).

N1/E1.4 Add single-digit numbers with totals to 10

The deep blue section gives the curriculum level and element number.
N1 = whole numbers. E1 = level Entry 1.

(a) understand the operation of addition and related vocabulary, e.g. add, sum of, total, plus, etc.

The medium blue section gives extra information about the skills, knowledge and understanding expected from learners after working on this curriculum element. There can be between 0-7 sub-elements listed (this example includes 2: labelled a and b).

Note - white highlighting indicates elements or sub-elements that have been added or amended in the 2009 curriculum update.

(b) understand that addition is commutative (the concept not the terminology)
  • Ask learners what different words they use for addition.
  • Explore different strategies for mental addition by eliciting learners' methods, e.g. 5 + 4 is one less than 5 + 5.
  • Use objects or coins to reinforce the idea of addition as grouping together.
  • Use a number line to practise addition by counting on.

The pale blue bulleted section lists suggested activities and examples as listed in the new online curriculum. The new online curriculum on the Excellence Gateway also has an area where tutors can add their own suggested activities.

tarsia fjsw

Cardinal and ordinal number match Tarsia puzzle is 16 piece jigsaw. Simple and straightforward but it makes a great group activity. Cardinal and ordinal numbers are matched with number words to form a triangle. This puzzle constructs sequentially, i.e. the word 'one' is at the triangle's apex, matching with 1, then two, underneath it and so on up to 10 in cardinals and 8th in ordinals (this makes it a lot easier for preEntry learners to see how the triangle is constructed). Andrea suggests: "Distribute the pieces at random around the group (sitting round a table). Ask learners to identify the numbers on their pieces to match with spoken words as they appear in the gradually growing triangle in the centre of the table. My learners were enthralled watching the big triangle 'grow' from the little triangles". Contributed by Andrea McCulloch, LEAP Skills for Life Centre, Barnard Castle and Learn East, Peterlee. 10K Created with Tarsia Formulator (see our Useful Links page for further details) which is available for free download and creates its own custom Tarsia (fjsw) files.
