Homophone card game is a lovely kinaesthetic game with differentiation ideas to suit E3-L2. Match homophones to definitions as quickly as you can to be the winning group! 13 pairs of words, 26 definition cards.
Written to accompany the school-based Letters & Sounds reading scheme (which can be adapted and used to teach adults). All the words are based on phase 2 of the scheme (available free – for details see attached teaching notes or visit http://nationalstrategies.standards.dcsf.gov.uk/ and type Letters and Sounds in the search box).
Please also see Margaret Adam’s High Frequency Words (below) which focuses on the 100 most frequent words used in the same reading scheme.

Set of two resources PowerPoint Straightforward but very useful introduction to computers for preEntry and Entry 1 students. Ideal to use before playing the accompanying bingo game. Bingo Eight different boards. Call out the name of the part (or write on the class whiteboard for a literacy group). First to complete a line wins (use counters to cover, or laminate and cross off with a dry wipe pen).
Students must circulate and question other class members in order to complete the bingo grid. Makes a great ice-breaker or warm-up activity. Also makes a good lead in to sentence work.
Aapted from Heidi Griffin’s original version (see below), this new version is differentiated for a slightly higher level learner group and includes sentences to be completed by the learner. Covers many speaking & listening elements (asking & answering questions, giving personal information, etc.).
First created for E3 MV students and a fabulous way to motivate students by using technical vocabulary from their own area of study. Includes info/answer sheet, matching game (12 words), alphabetical ordering, spelling and a crossword. For individual or group challenges.
Introduction to the past tense simple is a step by step series of info sheets, exercises, card game and comprehension. Covers both regular and v. common irregular verbs.
Great game for preEntry-E1 numeracy and literacy learners. Choice of word or (mostly) picture tiles provides easy differentiation. Can also used for individual matching games.

A beautiful set of bingo games for preEntry and E1 literacy/ESOL. Choice of word or picture tiles provides easy differentiation, plus there is a second game with larger bingo boards and more white space (often better for SLDD students).
