AL Rt/E3.1 Understand longer texts

A topical resource to revise features of instructional texts and imperative verbs.
Fully mapped to Functional English and ideal for mixed ability groups.

This is an activity on New Year. It was written for an E3 ESOL class but could be adapted for E2 fairly easily too. There is a reading comprehension, a group activity, writing practice and also an optional cut-up “top Ten” resolutions activity.

I haven’t done a lesson plan to go with the resources as I think they could be easily adapted and used in different ways.

A first person autobiographical account of life in outback Australia.
Exercises include comprehension questions using when, where etc.
A revision of past tense verbs – regular and irregular.
A fill the gap using the correct verb tense.
A writing prompt for students to write about themselves – emphasising the use of conjunctions and short paragraphs.
A Wordsearch.
Includes a glossary of Australian words used in the text.

Nice selection of winter activities written for an E3-L2 Functional Skills group (best for E3-L1).
The main activities are a reading comprehension (about the history of poinsettias and how they came to be popular at Christmas time) and a cloze exercise based on an old Mexican religious legend. There are also some maths questions.

This resource was created for Adult Literacy Entry 3 Learners. It includes reading comprehension and related exercises covering many curriculum areas, based on the Halloween theme.

The third book of Step 4 stories in the wonderful Readwell Road reading scheme for adults. All stories are written for adults and reflect real-life situations.

This story is aimed at Entry 3 readers and continues the story of Jim and Nan people introduced in Steps 1 to 3 (for Entry 1 and 2 readers) – see below for links to these stories.

A recently designed resource that I wanted to share with my fellow skillsworkshop users. I wanted something to use with my learners as a spelling lesson. I have tried to involve various activities to help motivate and keep interest whilst learning spellings.

Resource includes a cloze exercise, comprehension questions, homophones and plurals, and a final crossword to check skills.

A literacy resource for learners to find words containing long A sounds made by different digraphs. This resource was written as a pairs activity although it can equally be an individual one. There are four pieces of texts each using words containing predominantly one particular digraph – ai, ey, ay, or eigh. Learners can then search for other long A sounds formed from different clusters within the same text. Peer marking and plenary extend the learning.

Ron and Pam’s Post Office is saved; the continuing saga of Peg at the pub and her man Sam; and poor old Jim, who lives in the bungalow at No. 1, finally gets some help in his garden.

An unusual and very useful exercise written for preparation for work students who were nervous of taking messages and writing down information. It also provides useful reading and comprehension practice for all Entry Level learners and will prompt discussion on the importance of asking the right questions and writing down messages.
