  • be aware of the need to adapt register according to the formality of the situation and use appropriate forms of address when:
    (a) greeting (b) introducing self and others (c) leave taking
    Examples: - Good afternoon, Ms Kapoor. - Good afternoon. Please sit down. - Thank you. - Did you have a good journey? - (more formal)

    - Afternoon, Ms Kapoor. - Afternoon. - Please sit down. - Thanks. - Have a good journey? (more informal)

    Introduce self and/or a family member to a friend or to the doctor, e.g.: Hello, Hanna. Do you know my sister? Hanna, this is Samira. Samira, this is Hanna. Good morning. My name is ... and I am here with my mother. She doesn't speak English.

  • be aware of the need to adapt register according to the relationship between speakers, e.g. when inviting or offering. Examples: Do you want to come to ...? Can I invite you to ...?

  • be aware of the need to adapt register according to the seriousness of the situation, e.g. when apologising. Examples: Oh, sorry about that. I'm really sorry that happened. I didn't realise.

Formal and informal language

Set of 12 sentences to complete. The 12 missing words are 6 pairs of synonyms such as sorry / apologise, need / require, etc. Makes a good starting point for further discussion and/or further speaking and written work.

Phoning a guest house

A useful role play that provides the guest house owner’s script and prompts the student to complete the missing dialogue.
