ESOL: Reading text focus - comprehension (Rt)

Adult ESOL Core Curriculum (DfES 2001) > Reading (R) > Reading text focus - comprehension (Rt)

Resources listed directly below are likely to cover many aspects of reading comprehension - often at more than one curriculum level.

This worksheet was created to encourage students to recognize the features of written instructions (numbered lists to show the chronological order of the steps – use of imperative verbs) and explanations (headings written as questions which the text answers).

Editor’s note
Functional English mapping has been added.

This is a reading exercise I will be using with my L1-2 readers here in the U.S.

My students all speak Spanish as their first language and there are many Spanish cognates in the text. We have also been working on “who/what/when/where/why” questions in class, so that is the focus of the questions.

Editor’s note Also suitable for Functional English.

This Blue Cross resource was written for strong E3 or L1 (or even L2) ESOL learners. I first used it as a homework exercise. The English on the site is a little quirky but it is an exercise using authentic material which always has its upsides and downsides.

However, it is good on human interests and most people like animals. It involves ICT, Reading and Writing. It’s best to pre-teach the vocabulary.

Also ideal for, and fully mapped to, Functional Skills English Level 1 reading and writng.

Housework is a set of three related resources:
Housework is a very funny video (with a rather predictable ending!) accompanied by words and jolly music and designed to introduce, complement or summarise the two related resources below.
Although aimed at M8-E2, ESOL/Literacy groups of all levels will enjoy this video and it is bound to prompt disucssion. Supplied as a zipped WMV (Windows Media Video) file (6.8 MB). A big thank you must go to Janet Fletcher who co-authored this video!
