Set of resources created by myself and colleague, David Bayne , to help students use Word, Excel and Access. We wanted students to practise for the Level 2 ICT Functional Skills exams, using a method that would be familiar to them. They all drive cars and need to get them serviced, so this seemed a suitable area to use.
One of the Level 2 Functional English Writing exam papers asked students to write a speech.
I found a speech online and showed them how to use repeated words, emphasis, subheadings and to think about their audience. I then used the Drink Aware website to create this resource to enable students to practise speech writing.
This resource could also be used to practise writing letters or emails to colleagues to encourage them to think about drink driving, and to practise other aspects of writing styles for Level 2 exams.

GCSE English Spoken Language AO7 Formal presentation skills
The classic example of a tally is keeping track of how many cars of each colour go past in the street, but that is rather awkward to do in practice.
Use this presentation to save having to leave the comfort of the classroom! It is a PowerPoint slideshow of cars of various colours, to be projected onto the board. Tell learners to keep a tally of how many cars of each colour appear. Where a car has more than one colour, they should put it under the predominant colour.
E1 learners could focus on simply counting (for instance) all the red cars.
An original resource to generate discussion, practise reading comprehension and writing skills (formal letter). Ideal for Functional Skills Motor Vehicle students. Aimed at L1-2 although the discussion is also suitable for Entry Level.
A high interest worksheet which uses the layout of engines to reinforce some basic mathematical concepts, and to encourage reading. Lots of discussion points.
The angle of the V – right angle or acute angle?
Counting in 2s – How may cylinders – 2 rows of 3, etc.
Editor’s note: interesting mix of skills covered from E2 to L1. Focus is on angles but there is also basic doubling and counting in twos so would work well in mixed ability groups.
A short reading adapted from an online news report. Exercises include comprehension questions, placing sentences in the correct order, matching words and phrases and a fill the gap exercise. Answer sheet included.
Editor’s note
Fully mapped to E2 Functional English (reading) with extra teaching tips.
A practice exam question based on the style of Edexcel functional skills writing exam questions. Ideal for motor vehicle students.
One task for L1/L2 (formal letter) and one for E3 (letter) which also has a writing frame. Both tasks are on the subject of proposed changes to the driving test and driving laws for new drivers. A fictional story in Great Britain (currently) but real in Northern Ireland, this task also promotes lots of discussion from students which could be used for speaking and listening practice.
A set of questions about an advertisement for motorbikes. Students are asked to find information about the store, as well as comparing the prices of motorbikes for sale. Provides practice in scanning, skimming, comparing numbers, etc.
Answer key included.
A contextualised set of Functional Maths tasks for Motor Vehicle students. Includes:
Counting up money and making up floats
Adding up prices and working out change
Extracting information from a table
An alternative version of this worksheet is also available (Handling cash in a salon).
Both worksheets are linked to the “Working with Decimals” lesson plan and PPT by Charlotte Gustar (listed under See also below).
