## Problem page extra handouts for E2-L1

Submitted by Lisa Holland on Mon, 2011-04-18 18:21

#### Resource type: Discussion points, Writing prompts

I created these hand-outs for my Entry 1 to Level 1 learners and used them to accompany Saul Pope’s E3-L2 Problem Page resource (see below for a link to Saul’s resource).

I found the resources very useful for both motivational purposes (all students enjoyed the discussion aspect) and also to inform future planning (all students found it difficult putting pen to paper when writing their response).

The initial hand-out (page 1) is an example problem and response taken from a contemporary magazine.

A really interesting quick quiz – originally written to get e2e learners interested in numbers but makes an ideal warm up activity for any group (at any level).

## E1-E2 Mobile Phones Functional Maths

Submitted by Deborah Proudfoot on Tue, 2011-03-08 17:38

#### Resource type: Investigation or project, Worksheet or assignment

This task is aimed at E1-E2 learners but can be adapted to include other levels.
The resource is great to use with learners as a mobile phone is something of interest to them whilst they also complete lots of maths activities. It has numbers to 10 in digits and words, writing a cheque, extracting information, addition, different ways to make 10p, and prices.

I start it off with a mindmap activity where learners name all the maths used when buying a mobile phone (can add English in here as well).

## Ask Anne - sharing a problem

Submitted by Anne Candan on Mon, 2010-06-07 22:22

#### Resource type: Discussion points, Worksheet or assignment, Writing frame

A great set of functional English tasks based on an ‘agony aunt’ letter from someone who wants to lose weight (tutors should therefore use their discretion before using this resource).
Reading comprehension, discussion and a scaffolded writing task (with writing frame). Ideal for (and fully mapped to) E1-2 Functional English.

## Months and seasons

Submitted by Sonia Carroll on Mon, 2010-02-22 22:22

#### Level: E1, E2

A beautiful set of worksheets. Learners must match months to seasons and also relate well known festivals and celebrations to each season (there is also a handy overview calendar for 2010). The last two sheets focus specifically on spring (clothes, foods, etc.).
Also useful for E1-2 ESOL / Literacy (spelling months of the year).

#### Resource type: Investigation or project, Worksheet or assignment

An adaptation of John Thompson’s popular You’re in the money (1997 – see below) which makes good use of Argos and Littlewoods catalogues.
